Sara Leal was born in Porto, and grew up in the Aczores. She studied and worked in Lisbon and then New York. She then returned to the islands where she has been developing her work mainly in cinema. She is the author of a feature film on the Fajã de Santo Cristo, and another on the Ilha Terceira Carnival. She founded the production company Alga Viva with Nuno Costa Santos, and they started a collection of films by Azorean authors with the film J.H. Santos Barros – Fazer Versos Dói. She does video-installation, photography, which she rarely shows, and writes.
